Roundworms are probably the most common type of worms dogs get. They are white or tan in color and can grow to around seven inches. They look like spaghetti noodles. (Don’t mean to turn you off to spaghetti). They can live in the soil for months or even years. This is why it is important to clean up dog feces from your yard. (from anywhere actually)
Puppies can get these worms from their mothers before they are even born. Sometimes they get it from their mothers’ milk as well. That is why it is important to de-worm puppies when they are young.
Since dogs eat many things including dirt and things covered in dirt, they are the major victims of this parasite. Mice and other outdoor rodents can also carry the worms, so don’t let your dog eat these.
The eggs usually hatch in a dog’s stomach. This may cause vomiting and/or diarrhea. This is especially true in puppies. In puppies these worms may cause coughing and gagging as they navigate into the lungs. The puppy will cough them up and swallow them. Later the eggs hatch in the stomach, etc… Most adult dogs have an acquired immunity to the roundworm and they rarely make it out of the larvae stage.
